Lack of information and practices interoperability, lack of collaboration and the absence of work process integration constitute a threat to EPC companies' profitability and Owner capital spending effectiveness. Unorganized and unstructured digital transformation can amplify these inefficiencies leading to the dramatic increase of indirect costs and the unpredictability of capital spending.

“The first rule of any technology used in a business is that automation applied to an efficient operation will magnify the efficiency. The second is that automation applied to an inefficient operation will magnify the inefficiency.

- Bill Gates

To avoid such scenarios, a capital project organization needs to start a solid journey of:

  • Standardization for knowledge and information exchange between business partners involved in the capital project lifecycle

  • Information Integration across management and content applications within a given project/site

  • Collaborative knowledge management for supporting distributed operations and teams

While progress has been made in the development of such standards for the exchange of engineering and design information (e.g. ISO 15926), little has been achieved to cover the rest of the information exchanged in the project lifecycle which is: semantic non-engineering information.

Concord Standards Team has developed iCS: the industry's first Project Knowledge Architecture for non-engineering information modeling covering project descriptive, definition, execution, planning and reporting standards.

ICS stands for Integrated Collaboration Standard and is expressed in a logic-based language, so that detailed, accurate, consistent, sound, and meaningful distinctions can be made among the classes, properties, and relations governing project development and management body of knowledge.

ICS can perform automated reasoning, and thus provide advanced services to intelligent applications such as conceptual/semantic search and retrieval, software agents, decision support, speech and natural language understanding, knowledge management, intelligent databases, and electronic commerce.

The integrated Collaboration Standard™ (ICS™) includes:

The objectives of Project Knowledge Architecture and Modeling are to enable:

  • Interoperability of practices and information integration, through

    • Knowledge models for the various concepts of capital projects

    • Standardized formal term for expressing information, knowledge, requirements and activities related to all non-engineering information for capital projects.

    • Modeling of relationships and expert knowledge buried in project history

  • Applying intelligence on data, knowledge and requirements, for

    • Enabling intelligent search into the body of knowledge of the project documentation

    • Supporting technology implementation of project management activities in a complex multi-stakeholder environment

    • Enabling computer augmented verification of project transactions

  • Building an institutional history ready to use for deep learning applied to training and project management capability building
